The route passes through Multnomah Falls, a beautiful waterfall located east of Troutdale. It is the tallest waterfall in Oregon. If you a true fan of the great outdoors, then don't limit yourself to photography, for there are a lot of hiking trails around the falls. If you prefer less crowded places, then you can just as well make a quick stop at Shepperd's Dell Falls or Wahkeena Falls.
On your way to the Dalles, do visit Vista House, an observatory and a comfort station for tourists. Built on a cliff, it offers magnificent views of the Columbia River. Besides, there is a nice gift shop there!
If the above is not enough to satisfy your need for adventure, then do a bit of windsurfing, kitesurfing, or kayaking in Hood River, a small city that is about 30 miles north of Mount Hood, the highest peak in Oregon.
